The State of AI Visibility for Local Businesses in 2026

We audited 6,464 local businesses across the US. Here's what we found about who AI systems recommend — and who they ignore.

We scanned 6,464 local service businesses across major US metros. The results are stark: AI systems ignore the vast majority of local businesses, regardless of their real-world reputation.

Here's the data.

The Numbers

Out of 6,464 businesses we audited — plumbers, electricians, HVAC companies, roofers, landscapers, and more:

  • 70.8% have zero AI visibility (score 0/100)
  • 85.4% score under 10/100
  • Only 4% are recommended by any AI platform

These aren't obscure businesses. Many have hundreds or thousands of Google reviews and 4.5+ star ratings. One Phoenix plumbing company with over 33,000 Google reviews scored 0/100 on our AI visibility scale.

Why This Matters Now

The shift is accelerating fast. According to BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 45% of consumers now use AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity to find local services — up from just 6% one year ago. AI is now the third most-used discovery channel for local businesses, behind only Google and Facebook.

Yet according to SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index (analyzing 350,000+ business locations), only 1.2% of local businesses are recommended by ChatGPT.

That's a massive gap between where customers are looking and where businesses are showing up.

What Actually Drives AI Visibility

Our analysis of 328 businesses with both audit data and AI visibility scores revealed three clear signals:

1. Foursquare Presence

Foursquare supplies an estimated 60-70% of ChatGPT's local business data through their partnership with OpenAI. In our data, businesses with a Foursquare listing averaged 2.3 points higher on AI visibility than those without — the strongest single-platform signal we found.

Most small businesses have never touched their Foursquare profile. That's the biggest missed opportunity in local AI optimization.

2. Review Volume (But Only Above 500)

Google review count has a clear threshold effect:

| Reviews | Avg AI Visibility | |---------|-------------------| | Under 250 | ~2.0 | | 250-499 | 3.7 | | 500+ | 7.2 |

Below 250 reviews, there's almost no differentiation. Above 500, visibility jumps 3.6x. AI systems appear to use review volume as a trust signal, with a meaningful breakpoint around 500.

3. Platform-Specific Optimization

One of our most surprising findings: businesses are often visible on one AI platform but completely invisible on another. One appliance repair company scored 94 on ChatGPT but 0 on Perplexity. A roofing company scored 54 on Perplexity but 0 on ChatGPT.

ChatGPT and Perplexity use fundamentally different data sources. Optimizing for one doesn't guarantee visibility on the other.

What Doesn't Matter (As Much As You'd Think)

Google ranking alone doesn't predict AI visibility. Research shows that 89% of ChatGPT recommendations come from businesses at Google position 21 or lower. Fewer than 10% of AI-cited sources rank in Google's top 10. This is genuinely a different game from traditional SEO.

Google reviews alone aren't enough. Our Kansas City case study found a plumber with 724 five-star Google reviews and zero AI visibility — while a competitor with only 161 reviews scored 5x higher. The difference: data consistency and platform presence, not review volume.

The Conversion Premium

When AI does recommend a business, the impact is significant. Research from Go Fish Digital found that AI-sourced visitors convert at 27% versus 2.1% from standard search — a 12x premium. Marchex reports that homeowners who find a business through ChatGPT are 4 to 23 times more likely to call than those who found it through Google.

The phone rings and the customer says, "ChatGPT recommended you." That's the new word-of-mouth.

What Local Businesses Should Do

Based on our data and industry research, the highest-impact actions are:

  1. Claim and complete your Foursquare listing. This is the single highest-leverage action for ChatGPT visibility. Fill out every field: name, address, phone, website, hours, categories, photos, description.

  2. Ensure data consistency across platforms. When your name, address, and phone number conflict across Google, Yelp, Foursquare, and Bing, AI systems lose confidence in your business.

  3. Add Schema.org structured data to your website. LocalBusiness markup helps every AI system understand your business. Research shows structured data improves AI citation rates by up to 58%.

  4. Build reviews across multiple platforms. AI models are more confident recommending businesses with reviews on 2-3 recognized platforms, not just Google.

  5. Check your visibility — don't assume. Most businesses have no idea how they appear (or don't appear) in AI results.
