The Foursquare Effect: How One Listing Powers 70% of ChatGPT's Local Results

Most businesses optimize for Google. But ChatGPT gets 70% of its local business data from Foursquare. Here's why your Foursquare listing matters more than you think.

2026-04-014 min read

Ask any local business owner where they focus their online presence, and they'll say Google. Maybe Yelp. Social media.

Almost nobody says Foursquare.

That's a problem — because Foursquare supplies an estimated 60-70% of ChatGPT's local business data. If your Foursquare listing is incomplete, outdated, or unclaimed, you're effectively invisible to the 300 million weekly ChatGPT users who ask questions like "best plumber near me."

The Partnership Most Businesses Don't Know About

In late 2025, Foursquare announced a formal partnership with OpenAI. When someone asks ChatGPT a location-based question, ChatGPT triggers a live search against Foursquare's Places API. The business name, category, address, phone, hours, photos, and ratings that Foursquare has on file are what ChatGPT shows to the user.

This isn't training data from years ago. It's a live connection. Changes to your Foursquare listing can appear in ChatGPT results quickly.

What Our Data Shows

We analyzed 328 businesses that have both AI visibility scores and platform audit data. The results are clear:

Businesses with a Foursquare listing average 4.7 on AI visibility. Those without average 2.4. That's a +2.3 point difference — the strongest single-platform signal in our dataset.

No other platform comes close. Yelp presence adds +1.3 points on average. Google is universal (every business has it), so there's no comparison group. But Foursquare is the standout differentiator.

Why Most Businesses Don't Have a Foursquare Listing

Foursquare shut down its consumer-facing city guide app in 2025. Most people think Foursquare is dead. But the underlying data platform — which powers not just ChatGPT but also Apple Maps, Uber, and dozens of other services — is more important than ever.

The typical local business owner:

  • Doesn't know Foursquare has a business listing
  • Doesn't know ChatGPT pulls from Foursquare
  • Has never visited business.foursquare.com
  • Has an auto-generated listing that's incomplete or inaccurate

This creates a massive opportunity for businesses willing to spend 30 minutes claiming their listing.

What a Complete Foursquare Listing Looks Like

A fully optimized Foursquare business listing includes seven key elements:

  1. Business name (exact match with your Google listing)
  2. Full address (including suite numbers)
  3. Phone number (the same one on your website and Google)
  4. Website URL
  5. Business hours (including holiday hours)
  6. Categories (be specific — "Plumber" not "Home Services")
  7. Photos (at least 3: storefront or vehicle, team, completed work)

Our audit data shows that listing completeness matters. In our Kansas City case study, a plumber with a Foursquare listing at 25% completeness scored 0 on AI visibility. The incomplete listing may have been sending conflicting partial data to ChatGPT rather than helping.

How to Claim Your Listing

The process takes about 30 minutes:

  1. Go to business.foursquare.com
  2. Search for your business name
  3. If it exists, claim it. If not, create a new listing
  4. Fill out every field — name, address, phone, website, hours, categories
  5. Upload at least 3 photos
  6. Write a business description (150+ words, naturally mention your services and service area)

The most important rule: Make sure your name, address, and phone number match exactly what's on your Google Business Profile and website. AI systems cross-reference these sources, and inconsistencies reduce trust.

The Bigger Picture

Foursquare is the highest-leverage action for ChatGPT visibility, but it's not the only thing that matters. Based on our analysis:

  • Data consistency across all platforms is critical (name, address, phone matching everywhere)
  • Review volume matters above the 500-review threshold
  • Website structured data (Schema.org markup) helps all AI systems understand your business
  • Each AI platform has different data sources — optimizing for ChatGPT (Foursquare) doesn't automatically help with Perplexity (web content) or Google AI (Google Business Profile)

The businesses that will dominate AI search are the ones that treat their data infrastructure as seriously as they treat their Google reviews.
